The Origin Story

I spent years working as a stonemason alongside my brother for my uncle's landscaping company. There's something incredibly satisfying about fitting natural stones together to create beautiful, lasting outdoor spaces. But I also saw the challenge: the creative process often limited by the physical demands of moving heavy stones around to test different layouts.

After transitioning into software development, I realized I could combine both of my careers to enhance what stonemasons do. Hardscape Genius brings together hands-on masonry expertise with modern technology to unlock more creative possibilities.

The Goal

Stone masonry is an art form. Every patio is unique because every stone is different. The challenge isn't lack of creativity. It's being able to explore all the amazing design possibilities before committing to a layout in the physical world.

I wanted to create a tool that would let masons focus on the creative and skilled parts of their work (the design vision, the precise cuts, the expert installation) while technology handles the trial-and-error of testing layouts.

Hardscape Genius uses computer vision and AI to automatically detect and measure stones from photos, then provides an digital workspace where you can explore design possibilities freely.
